Japanese beetles...

Japanese beetles are quickly becoming one of the most devastating pests of both
turf and ornamentals in the United States. Their spread is governed by temperature
and precipitation. Japanese beetles begin their life cycle as grubs in the turf and are
very active root feeders from about Labor Day until the end of June of the following
season. Unlike other grubs, Japanese beetles turn into adults in one year, usually in
early to mid July. At that point, they begin feeding on flowers and leaves of most
green plants. Plants that are attacked by Japanese beetle adults are identified by
leaves with a lacy appearance (below) and, if the damage is severe, complete
defoliation. Turf grass that is affected by Japanese beetle grubs can exhibit symptoms
of early drought due to extensive root feeding. If the turf receives adequate moisture
during grub feeding, new roots may grow but grubs are nevertheless still present in the
root zone, and can cause damage later if not treated.

Japanese beetle grubs can be treated with a granular insecticide in the fall of the
season through early spring, while adults can be treated by spraying with an
insecticide if present.

Tree and shrub pruning...

Proper pruning of trees can promote their long-term, healthy growth, as well as
enhancing the beauty and value of any property.
When pruning, we will remove weak, dead, broken, and crossing limbs, then remove
additional limbs if necessary to aid in proper structural growth. We will also prune to
provide clearance from any man-made structures that will be damaged by rubbing
limbs and excess moisture. Canopy thinning should also be done to increase airflow
and sunlight penetration to improve the overall health of your trees.
